After Riot Games announced that the Worlds 2021 have been moved from China to Europe, we now also know that Iceland will be the exact venue.
2 weeks ago it was announced that the Worlds will not take place in China but in Europe. Riot Games announced this in an official statement.
"Sadly, we reached the point where it is extremely difficult to guarantee that qualifying teams and their best players would be able to attend Worlds this year. As a result, we’ve made the tough decision to pivot Worlds from China... to Europe."
Iceland was the most obvious venue, since the MSI was also held there.
Where in Europe will the 2021 Worlds be held?
Iceland is to be the venue of the Worlds 2021! The Laugardalshöll Indoor Sporting Arena, which has already hosted the MSI, is set to become the new arena for the League of Legends Worlds 2021!
Riot manages to host all major tournaments in 2020/2021 despite the major difficulties with Covid-19. The 2020 Worlds in China ended with "zero infections" according to Riot Games' own statements.
Of course, this raises many questions... Will there be an opening ceremony? And...
Will there be spectators at the 2021 Worlds?
The 2021 World Championship will once again be held in a Bubble, just like the 2020 World Championship and the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational.
These are now the second Worlds in a row where no spectators are allowed. A solution could have been found, like at the EM for example. But Riot Games seems to want to play it safe and not endanger anyone. Iceland is the perfect place for that. Cut off from the rest of the world and with few inhabitants, the biggest risks of Covin-19 are avoided.
Of course, last year's Opening Ceremony doesn't come close to those of 2019 or 2018. But Riot Games wouldn't be Riot Games if they hadn't thought of something cool for the 2021 worlds. So we can still stay curious.
